Joe Kittenger was a test pilot and pre-NASA fly-boy. He set balloon altitude records for his assent in Project Manhigh I. During Project Excelsior III, he not only ascended to the edge of the stratosphere, but jumped from the edge of his craft with an experimental space suit and parachute. He fell for 4 minutes 26 seconds and reached a maximum speed for 614 mph. During the fall he both injured his hand due to the depressurization of his glove, and set several records that have not been bested to this day.
